INTRODUCTION
Many people believe that computers are highly reliable and are
designed to work continuously without wearing out or breaking
down. This expectation is generally true provided that the
requirements for reliability are met.
The requirements for reliability are based mainly on preventive
maintenance and the knowledge of handling each component of the
computer system. Preventive maintenance means avoiding dust, dirt
and keeping the computer clean and looking new at all times.
The fact is many computer owners never give a thought to dust. A
computer may run like a charm until dust clogs the air vents and
causes some internal components to overheat thereby destroying the
internal circuitry of the computer and costing the user hundreds
of dollars in repair.
In many cases, the investment made in a computer system is
considered the third most expensive investment after the house and
the automobile. Most people take care of their health, cars,
houses and many other items which they consider valuable. However,
their computer, one of their most valuable investments, does not
receive the needed care to ensure its smooth operation.
Based on the above facts, it is important to know how to handle
each component of your computer system as well as the preventive
maintenance procedures to be followed. Personal computers are
easy to take care of if the right procedures are followed.
This guide shows you how to take care of your system to avoid
future costly repair bills. You will learn how to avoid and remove
dust and static build up in your system. In step by step, you
will learn how to clean each part of your computer system.
By following the procedures presented here, you should be able to
keep your system reliable and add many years to the life of your
computer.
Also included, information on handling diskettes, sources of
diagnostic software and a listing of many repair centers in the
U.S.A.
